Door Hinges / September 18, 2018 / Pauline Francoeur.
Whats great about door hinges is that believe it or not they are available in different styles. Like the antique ones mentioned earlier as an example. You can even get ones that have a colonial feel to them featuring elegant scrollwork and looping designs. Modern ones that have a sleek look are also an option along with many others including those that are on the contemporary side and some that are more traditional. Plus along with purchasing door hinges for your doors there are others offered by manufacturers for other things throughout your home as well.
By and large one of the most important inventions for everyday use isnt very large at all. Because of cabinet door hinges we are able to store things away behind doors that previously would have been on shelves. Although originally used in 1600 B.C. the Romans adapted the hinge for home use. Flash forward to the American colonies and hinges were used everywhere. Eventually they were outfitted for the doors of wagons heading west most prominently by Charles Hager in St. Louis. He founded the present day Hager Hardware Company and in the 1900s received a patent for the compact butt hinge and the rest as they say is history.
Too weak of hinges and youll always be straightening the door. This can become maddening very quickly. If you have concealed hinges and want to move to surface mounted cabinet hinges chances are good that youll want to go with either semi-concealed hinges where only the frame wing is visible (the door part goes on the back side of the cabinet door) overlay hinges or inset hinges. It just depends on the type cabinet doors you have. One good hint: Before you redo all your hinges buy several different styles and finishes and put them on them in various parts of the kitchen.
This is just figuring the cost of the materials though. To have them installed by a cabinetry professional may cost an additional seventy five to one hundred and fifty dollars. If you cannot locate a soft close part to work with your existing hinges or you are not interested in switching out your hinges to be able to benefit from the new clip-on piece you can purchase a buffer shock absorber that attaches to the cabinet separate from the hinge. Some of these mechanisms get pressed into a hole that is drilled into the cupboard top or bottom. Other styles can be installed using screws. The purchase cost of these parts ranges from three to six dollars each. There will be only one slow-close part that needs to be installed per kitchen or bathroom cabinet door.
