Door Threshold / September 18, 2018 / Pauline Francoeur
Buying a cheap bifold door may prove a disappointment unless you check carefully that the door you are buying will meet your needs and expectations before you order. Threshold ramps are designed to help you get over a small dip or rise. They work great for power scooters or wheelchairs as they allow you to span doorway thresholds or small steps that may otherwise would have an abrupt height gain or drop. These ramps can be fixed in place or portable. If you have an electric mobility scooter it is a good idea to have a threshold ramp. Even a 1-inch dip or rise can pose a significant barrier and could result in injury if traversed.
You can have it made from steel wood or even aluminum. They are all effective but all require some sort of seal to fill in the garage door threshold. Here is some information on the various types of garage door available. The material used will determine the type of threshold seal that you require. Wood is probably one of the oldest and most used materials. It certainly has a great deal of charm and is still preferred by many over the more modern metals and plastics of the modern world. They feel that the wood gives a character that the other materials just cannot deliver.
Tightly wedged shims will allow you to operate the door carefully. Open and close to check the door touching the weather stripping evenly top to bottom for any possible jambs twist. Adjust as necessary even though jambs may not flush with plaster top to bottom. A good carpenter wont assume the original door was installed correctly right? Check the brickmold reveal you should have consistent and even measurements side to side and top to bottom. Its unusual to have brick out of plumb to any great extent. Adjust shims again as necessary. Index the jambs in the rough opening and the shims to jambs with pencil for reference when installing the system permanently. Remember you only have one chance to get this installation right so be patient - you will be rewarded with a satisfying outcome.
