Door Hinges / October 11, 2018 / Yvette Guerette
Amongst all the different door hinges out there one of the most common types is the butt hinge. It is two leaves with screw holes held together by a pin or a rod. Both leaves are recessed one end into the door and the other into the frame. When the door is closed all you see is the pin. With this type of door hinge it is easy to take the door down because all you have to do is remove the pin. Another type of door hinge that is similar to a butt hinge is the butterfly hinge. It also has two flaps or leaves held together by a pin but instead of being recessed into the door and frame they are mounted on the outside and when opened have the appearance of a butterfly in flight. These door hinges are highly decorative ranging in style from colonial to art deco and are used only on flush doors usually for cabinets. T-strap door hinges are more commonly seen on garage doors or boxes because they lift up rather than out.
Who would have thought that a door hinge could make the difference in the look of the door but it does. And you will quickly begin to see how important it actually is and you will be kicking yourself for not doing this sooner. Door hinges where would we be without them? Thats right we wouldnt be able to open and close the doors throughout our homes which would be a problem. Now even though these fixtures serve a pretty important purpose does not mean that you have to settle for any old ones. In fact there are many decorative selections available. If you are wondering how can door hinges be decorative well it is because of the fabulous materials that they are crafted from and the lovely finishes that can be applied to them.
Cabinet door hinges are one of the biggest afterthoughts in home design but they often get the biggest workout in the home. Nary an hour goes by that someone isnt opening a cabinet somewhere in the home whether its in the kitchen pantry bathroom or hallway. Most simply make do with the hinges that came with the cabinet. Only when they begin to squeak and sway in complaint about their endless exercise do we give thought to changing them. And only then do we only change the offending hinge that has failed to do its duty tightly and quietly. But changing out hinges can yield some exciting results in the home particularly when they are visible hinges.
