Door Threshold / September 18, 2018 / Pauline Francoeur.
With the rough opening clean and prepped for the new door and jamb move the system into place as one with door hung on hinges. Temporarily shim the side jambs tight top and bottom ends in the rough opening. Temporary shims at the bottom hinge may also be required to straighten door sag. The top hinge will sag just be aware that you will compensate for it later with shims and a screw to snug it when the door is installed permanently. Use of a level isnt necessary just align the jambs flush with the interior plaster and shift shims to square the door in the jambs with even spacing reveal.
This protection screws into a wood subflooring to hold it in place and thus cannot be used on sliding doors installed over cement slabs which are commonly used on the west coast. Another option that does work for protecting sliding doors installed on cement slabs is impact-resistant U-board protection. It is a thick heavy weight compressed paper protection that is made from recycled material and is completely reusable. The U-board is placed over the tracks while the door is open and protects sliding door tracks from dirt and grime. As with the plastic protector the Sill Pro keeps the sliding tracks clean and protects the tracks of the door from damage that can interfere with the working operations of the door.
This calculation is based on the specification of the double glazing together with the profile design and dimensions to determine the insulation benefits of the door measured in U-values with the lower the value the better the insulation achieved. The minimum acceptable under current building regulations for replacement doors is a 1.8 U-value but some local authorities will insist on lower values particularly for new build extensions. 2. GLASS SIGHT LINES Another important consideration should be the sight line or width of door profiles between each panel of the folding sliding door as this will affect the visible glass area available when the door is in the closed position. Most bifold doors are designed with dedicated profiles to minimise these sightlines as much as possible but some timber and many upvc folding doors use wide chunky profiles that produce very broad sight lines in excess of 200mm wide that will ultimately spoil your view.
Several sill manufacturers provide plastic threshold protection that is specific to the model of sill they are selling. Unfortunately heavy duty plastic protectors are not available for every type of entry threshold so the protection is not easy to obtain. There is one surface protection company on the west coast that does inventory plastic threshold protection for two of the most common sill profiles. For protecting sliding door tracks there are two types of threshold protection. The first is a hinged plastic protection that flips over the tracks of sliding doors to keep them clean from debris.
