Door Threshold / September 12, 2018 / Carine Auclair.
What is a high door threshold? This would be any doorway that has a threshold that you have to step over or a threshold that is higher than the surface you are walking on. These safety problems are obvious the high door thresholds are a trip hazard and for elderly people can be difficult to step over. Handicapped people in wheelchairs or motorized scooters wont be able to access these areas unless there is an alternative doorway that provides access for their wheelchairs. Usually the high door thresholds are located in a garage where someone has either made a mistake during new construction or simply figured that it would be easier to install the door a little higher and to remove the concrete foundation footing to install the door properly.
Even though steel is extremely strong the threshold still requires to be sealed properly. In parts of the country that constantly suffer from hurricanes you will often see a storm shield garage door threshold seal fitted. These are extra strong and can withstand even the most extreme of weather conditions. Vital if you are located in a hurricane zone. Some may even opt for the lighter weight fiberglass composite garage door. These are less common as they do not provide the level of security that the previous two do. They can be lower in cost though. Whichever of the options you opt for you must ensure that you install a good quality garage door threshold seal.
Several sill manufacturers provide plastic threshold protection that is specific to the model of sill they are selling. Unfortunately heavy duty plastic protectors are not available for every type of entry threshold so the protection is not easy to obtain. There is one surface protection company on the west coast that does inventory plastic threshold protection for two of the most common sill profiles. For protecting sliding door tracks there are two types of threshold protection. The first is a hinged plastic protection that flips over the tracks of sliding doors to keep them clean from debris.
It is a truly green product that uses recycled cardboard for the door protection with natural rubber bands for attachment. Another popular protector is the 1-2-3 Doorshield product. This protector is not recyclable as it uses plastic Velcro for the door attachment. These large protectors are most often purchased in pallet quantities for use on many commercial projects however they are also available in smaller quantities as well. Doorjambs are quite often dented or scratched during construction. There are several types of protection available that snap onto the door casing and protect the jamb.
