Door Hinges / September 21, 2018 / Yvette Guerette
I am sure that you know what door hinges are but you probably just think that they are the reason why the door opens and closes. While this is true there is a another purpose for door hinges. Door hinges can also do more than squeak they can be used to make your door look nicer. Hinges much more noticeable when they look bad but when they look good you dont know why the door might look as good as it does. This is truly an eye catching piece of door hardware but without the grasp or understanding that you are actually noticing it. Let me explain this its as if your spouse got a haircut you notice that they look different but you just cant seem to put your figure on the change. The only difference here is that the door wont yell at you your spouse will.
By and large one of the most important inventions for everyday use isnt very large at all. Because of cabinet door hinges we are able to store things away behind doors that previously would have been on shelves. Although originally used in 1600 B.C. the Romans adapted the hinge for home use. Flash forward to the American colonies and hinges were used everywhere. Eventually they were outfitted for the doors of wagons heading west most prominently by Charles Hager in St. Louis. He founded the present day Hager Hardware Company and in the 1900s received a patent for the compact butt hinge and the rest as they say is history.
But when door hinges become a bit unhinged from years of use they can not only cause doors to squeak stick or rub but allow heat to escape and cold to enter. Maintaining your door hinges is a simple process something you can do once or twice a year. And it will keep your hinges working properly for years to come. Unlike the old days when door hinges were made of iron brass or steel todays hinges come in an array of materials and finishes. Thanks to modern manufacturing techniques most of these finishes are maintenance free. Left alone they wont tarnish rust or fail over time.
