Door Threshold / September 12, 2018 / Carine Auclair
Of course youre going to check the concrete threshold step for level. Carpenters never assume anything right? Measurement of the exterior brick opening overall height from threshold to lintel will be noted. Any further uncertainty about whether a house was built with masonry walls can be at least partly resolved by measuring the exterior brick opening overall width. A width measurement slightly off by about one-half inch from the nominal brick opening is a sure tip-off that youre going to be facing the direct fasten to masonry challenge. Adjust your installation estimate accordingly for some extra labor.
I would like to recommend something here for anyone who is thinking about installing a door that will have a high door threshold. Dont do it unless you have another reason that is protecting the area from water snow or something else that would create a bigger problem if you lower the door threshold. Heres what happens to most people. You walk through your home regularly travel about and even go to work without running into these high door thresholds. You come home and subconsciously youre not even thinking about the raised curb and you trip. One trip to the ground could cost you more in medical bills than it would have been to remove and lower the raised door threshold.
These large protectors are most often purchased in pallet quantities for use on many commercial projects however they are also available in smaller quantities as well. Doorjambs are quite often dented or scratched during construction. There are several types of protection available that snap onto the door casing and protect the jamb. These protectors can be made from molded plastic or cardboard. Pre-molded plastic protection works well for jambs with standard door casing widths. For larger jambs there are several wrap-around jamb protectors that work similarly but are not molded to an exact casing size.
